Abstract
In 1834, Eli Moore became the first trade union leader to win a seat in Congress. More than seventy years later, in 1908, organized labor made its first political endorsement. The decision to support Democrat William Jennings Bryan for president was a response to the use by business of its political war chest to elect Republican William McKinley in 1896. A process that began then has been evolving ever since. What has changed “is not just the scale of the effort-the millions spent in lobbying, political action, education, and propaganda-but its sophistication.”¹
