Abstract
Originating in nineteenth century concerns with the protection of unspoiled landscapes and natural resource conservation in the United Kingdom and the United States, environmentalism is now a global phenomenon, embracing a number of different perspectives. The development of different and multiple environmental movements worldwide is the outcome of contingent historical processes and events, the development of specific discourses, and the mobilization of material and cultural resources. There is no one ‘environmental’ movement. Rather, there are a number of different environmental movements that focus on a wide range of issues.
