Book chapter
Evaluation of Violence Risk in Adults
Forensic Assessments in Criminal and Civil Law
01 Dec 2012
Abstract
This chapter reviews concepts of forensic mental health assessment that are relevant to the evaluation of violence risk in adults. It first provides an overview of the legal context underlying evaluations of the risk of violence before turning to a discussion of the process of violence risk assessment, the role of specialized risk-assessment tools, and the integration of risk assessment into the forensic evaluation. For attorneys and judges involved in litigation in which violence risk assessment is conducted, the chapter presents a framework for facilitating a judgment about whether such risk assessment is consistent with best practice—and whether it is reasonably comprehensive and consistent with broad risk-assessment principles. It also considers the empirical foundations and limitations of the evaluation of violence risk in adults and concludes by outlining key aspects of report writing and testimony by forensic mental health experts.
