Abstract
This chapter describes approaches to the evaluation of syndromic surveillance systems that use clinical or healthcare administrative data to monitor disease trends. We focus on surveillance for the detection and monitoring of disease syndromes that might be identified before diagnoses are established. Such syndromic surveillance data increasingly are being used for timely detection and early characterization of potential outbreaks due to any hazard (including bioterrorism), for public health situation awareness and as an adjunct to routine public health surveillance. The widespread adoption of increasingly sophisticated syndromic surveillance systems calls for periodic evaluation of these systems to ensure that they support public health action by complementing other surveillance efforts.
