Abstract

Service-learning (SL) is a pedagogy that holds powerful potential to transform students, colleges and universities, and communities. This chapter reviews the evidence on the benefits of SL to institutions, students, and community partners and explore the implications of this pedagogy to benefit society. It situates in the emerging field of global service-learning (GSL) in order to explore how researchers and practitioners can pursue ethical community-university partnerships. The chapter interrogates the common narrative of SL by exploring both possibilities and risks to illuminate specific gaps such as community perspectives and partnerships. It describes the existing research and points to emerging efforts to address these gaps. The chapter concludes with recommendations for SL practitioners and researchers to break out of their silos to draw from other fields, learn together through building a community of practice, and intentionally focus on community perspectives through the incorporation of participatory methods.
