Abstract

Bottom ash Fly ash Experimentation Recycling Geogrids
About 40% of the electricity generated in the United States is from coal combustion power plants. As a result, more than 130 million metric tons of coal combustion residuals (CCRs) are produced in the United States annually. Despite reutilization efforts, more than 70% of fly ash produced in the United States is disposed of in ash landfills (dry method) or ash storage ponds (wet method). Both of these types of disposal methods have to meet stringent design requirements including static and seismic stability. In recent years stability retrofits or enhancements using geosynthetic products have been explored. These alternatives require knowledge of the interface shear strength characteristics between the coal ash materials and different geosynthetics. This paper will present results of a laboratory study involving interface shear strength tests and geosynthetic pullout tests between a compacted bottom ash material and a uniaxial geogrid material.
