Fidelity matters: Implementing study designs and interventions as intended

Abstract
Implementing study designs and interventions requires focused attention to fidelity or assuring that each design and intervention element is delivered as intended and consistently. Study designs and/or interventions that are not implemented as intended are at potential risk of resulting in Type I (false positive) or Type II (false negative) errors, resulting in “research waste.” In any study involving interventions, a fidelity plan should be developed that details strategies for enhancing, monitoring, and measuring the delivery, receipt, and enactment of the study design itself and the intervention. This chapter discusses the importance of fidelity, considerations in developing a fidelity plan, and the challenges in monitoring fidelity for different design conditions and intervention complexities.
