Book chapter
Focus groups
01 Jan 2022
Abstract
Conducting a focus group may be even more daunting than doing an interview. In addition, it's a bit hard to decide whether an interview versus a focus group is better for the research project. So, this chapter helps the researchers prepare for conducting a focus group and help them decide whether to do an interview or a focus group or both. It describes eight essential steps to conducting focus groups and explains how they differ from interviews. For example, the chapter shows how sampling groups of people for focus groups contrasts with sampling people to interview. It also suggests strategies for using technological aids, managing the dynamics of group process, and honing the facilitation or moderator techniques. The researchers will also learn tips for managing the tensions that naturally arise between participants' commonalities (homogeneity) and differences (heterogeneity).
