This chapter addresses the nature of forensic mental health assessment (FMHA), and the underlying models associated with it. The evaluation of juveniles in a legal context, for the purpose of either transfer or disposition, is a form of mental health evaluation for the courts that is similar in important respects to the evaluation of other individuals involved in different kinds of criminal and civil litigation. The chapter shows how this kind of juvenile FMHA is consistent with other kinds of forensic mental health assessment, but also addresses some distinctive aspects of transfer and disposition evaluations. FMHA, which provides mental health evaluation in legal contexts, encompasses a wide variety of legal questions. In Grisso's original Evaluating Competencies (1986), detailed attention was paid to describing a model for FMHA. Models applicable to many kinds of forensic evaluation can be useful in their breadth and overview. The findings of scientific research are an essential resource for any FMHA practitioner.
