Abstract
This chapter discusses the foundational aspects of forensic mental health assessment (FMHA) for the benefit of legal professionals. It first provides an overview of FMHA and its key components and broadly applicable principles. It then considers relevant sources of authority that can be used in developing best practice standards, including law, science, ethics, and practice. It also examines influences that can help attorneys to identify best practices—and good practitioners—in FMHA.
