Abstract

F32 Fellowship Grant K23 Niche National Institutes of Health R01 Translational research
Translational research studies involve many moving parts, starting from gathering patient samples to applying testable variables, quantifying data, and finally, expanding it to clinically applicable situations. For translational research in CT surgery specifically, the busy schedules during training and priority to perfect surgical skills are additional difficulties. Despite the dynamic and unpredictable nature of a study, it is important to outline all relevant details and begin with a strong framework. Securing funding is a vital first step and requires these directives to be clearly detailed. Whether you are a surgeon, scientist, or medical technology entrepreneur, it is crucial to tailor your project to your respective strength and ensure that it is clinically relevant. Finding a senior mentor or faculty mentor who shares your research interests and can provide advice toward the grant application is also critical. Keep in mind, it is acceptable, and in fact advisable, to apply to multiple different grants, as some will inevitably be denied. Finding starter grants, applying for different types of NIH grants, and seeking out funding from foundations that unite cardiothoracic surgeons are all helpful beginning points.
