Giving credit where it’s due: The theories that support adaptive leadership
Adaptive Leadership in a Global Economy: Perspectives for Application and Scholarship, 2
2022
Abstract
The practices of adaptive leadership are what one might call theories in action, theories that, when applied, offer leaders a route to addressing adaptive challenges. The theories themselves lead to a deeper exploration of how and why adaptive leadership is effective, and when. This chapter explores the theories that undergird adaptive leadership, delving into the origins of psychological safety (holding environment), resistance (stakeholder losses), conflict mediation (orchestrating conflict), organizational learning (adaptive challenges), and systems thinking (the balcony). Scholars of adaptive leadership can use these theoretical explanations as starting points for deeper study into its practices; practitioners will be able to draw on the perspectives of adaptive leadership with more intention as they better understand the thinking behind its practices.
