Abstract
In her bookSilences, Tillie Olsen documents the cultural silencing of women’s voices for reasons including (but not limited to) the following: censorship, self-censorship, sexist ideologies prescribing women’s submissiveness, the absence of role models, poverty, and racism. Women’s stories about their bodies have been particularly silenced because the female body continues to be a site of legal control. In the U.S., women’s reproductive rights have recently been attacked through challenges to Roe v. Wade; many individual states have narrowed choices for women (Frankel).
