Abstract
This chapter presents an overview of doctoral research that examines the impact of dance/movement therapy (DMT) on fostering empathy, positive peer relationships, and cultural self-efficacy among racially and ethnically diverse middle school students. The chapter presents an overview of the literature and theoretical frameworks that underlie socialization to address the complexities of ethnic bullying and its impact on the psychosocial well-being of immigrant and minority adolescents. Strategies employed in existing school violence prevention programs in the United States are reviewed, highlighting the potential of DMT as a complementary strategy. The intersection of DMT and neuroscience is explored, focusing on the polyvagal social engagement system and its role in fostering positive interpersonal relationships. Vignettes from the study highlight the transformative power of DMT in nurturing empathy, fostering connections, and promoting inclusivity among diverse middle school students while cultivating a sense of community within school environments. The DMT protocol and interventions are described, highlighting their instrumental role in achieving positive outcomes.
