Health equity: The potential goal and outcomes of interventions
Handbook of Intervention Science: From Design to Implementation, pp 119-137

Abstract
The underlying goal of behavioral intervention research is to achieve equity; that is, to improve the health, well-being, daily functioning, and quality of life of all individuals, families, providers, communities, and/or care systems and enable all individuals to achieve their best health. While all chapters in this Handbook assume a health equity lens, this chapter provides an overview and exclusive focus on health equity considerations in intervention science. Equity considerations impact every methodological decision including approaches to recruitment and retention, the delineation of inclusion and exclusion criteria, analytic decisions, and cultural or other types of adaptations to interventions, as well as implementation and dissemination approaches. In this chapter, we present basic definitions of common terminology of relevance to health equity such as the meaning of social and structural determinants, and we examine health equity/disparity frameworks and their implications for intervention development, evaluation, dissemination, and implementation.
