Abstract

Early in life, hearing loss can have profoundly detrimental effects on psychological and social development, particularly during early childhood when children are learning how to speak. Hearing loss in children results from a number of causes, including inherited disorders and syndrome, head trauma, and pre- and postnatal exposures to diseases and toxins (including antibiotics and noise). Recognition of conditions that predispose children to hearing loss allows early identification of hearing deficits and prompt initiation of aural rehabilitation. When a hearing loss is suspected, appropriate referrals to hearing professionals trained in the evaluation and management of hearing loss in children are critical.
