Abstract
There are many complexities associated with hearing protectors and their use. In order to be effective, they need to reduce sound reaching the ear by an amount appropriate to the individuals noise exposure. They also need to be comfortable enough to be worn routinely and of a design appropriate to the condition in which the individual wears them. The noise reduction rating (NRR) should be consistent with the intensity of noise to which the individual is exposed, and professionals should be aware that the amount of noise reduction in the field is substantially less than the NRR rating of the ear protector.
