Home Modifications
A Comprehensive Guide to Safety and Aging, pp 103-115
2023
Abstract
Remaining in the home throughout the aging process is desirable for many older adults and often tied to a sense of meaning and self. However, physical, cognitive, and environmental challenges can limit the ability to remain in the home as we age, especially in the presence of progressive or chronic illness. Home modification offers solutions and benefits to maintain function regardless of the effects of the aging processes and chronic, progressive illness, while decreasing injury and falls risk and contributing to overall wellness for aging populations. Home modifications occur on multiple scales ranging from whole home renovation to reorganization of spaces, and often inexpensive changes can lead to vast improvements in functional abilities. This chapter will highlight an array of considerations for home modifications, including those specific to common physical, cognitive, and functional changes, and room-by-room considerations to help make the most of the home environment and enable successful aging in place.
