Hospitals as a locus for violence intervention
Oxford Textbook of Violence Prevention

Abstract
It is estimated that up to 45% of violently injured individuals are violently reinjured within five years. Some violently injured individuals seek retaliation against those responsible for their injury. Hospitalbased violence intervention programmes (HVIPs) engage violently injured individuals shortly after their injury occurs to prevent violent reinjury and retaliation. HVIP staff conducts needs assessments and provide intensive case management services—connecting patients to mental health and substance misuse services, education, and job training programmes, and housing relocation assistance—to positively alter risk profiles. HVIPs have demonstrated effectiveness across a range of outcomes in randomized controlled evaluations. While more research and standardization is needed before HVIPs can be classified as an evidencebased practice, HVIPs represent an opportunity for healthcare institutions to play an active role in violence prevention.
