Abstract
Chapter 12 explores human resource law and human resource issues vital to the arts administrator. As nonprofit institutions continue to grow and evolve in response to issues like field-wide calls for social justice and a global pandemic, understanding the basics of employment law through the lens of nonprofit organizations is vital. The chapter begins by discussing employment classifications and then shifts into labor laws. The discussion here focuses primarily on the big two of occupational safety and health and family medical leave, particularly focusing on what every administrator should know. Next, we delve into occupational safety law from a human resources perspective. The discussion then moves to the execution of and working with unions and collective bargaining and finishes with Title VII of the Civil Rights Act that deals with anti-discrimination.
