Abstract
Hypothermia is defined as a core temperature below 35°C (95°F). Primary hypothermia occurs when the body is exposed to a cold environment that overwhelms the body’s compensatory mechanisms to heat loss such as increased muscle tone, shivering and vasoconstriction. Secondary hypothermia is due to the body being unable to maintain normothermia due to a medical condition such as hypothyroidism, adrenal insufficiency or hypoglycemia. Secondary hypothermia is often refractory to rewarming techniques and requires treatment of the underlying medical condition.
