Abstract
The increase in the number of cities and urban population as a result of industrial and commercial growth (urbanization) has affected social interactions, increased stress, and affected mental health. Socio-economic stressors and other factors associated with urban living affect the voice in numerous ways. These include behavioral changes in voice use as reactions to stress, alterations in breathing patterns, cardiovascular changes that alter voice, changes in vocal tract lubrication, oxidative stress and others. Urbanization also is associated with mental health disorders ranging from anxiety and depression to schizophrenia, all of which can affect voice.
