Abstract
A central theme throughout this Handbook is the importance of considering implementation at every stage of an intervention's lifecycle. In this chapter, we zero in on implementation issues and discuss the contributions of implementation science to intervention research. We define the implementation phase of an intervention's lifecycle and examine the activities within. We also address the crucial question of when an intervention is ready for implementation. Our focus is on the processes and outcomes of implementation. We provide tools to support the implementation process and describe factors that can either enhance or hinder implementation efforts. Additionally, we discuss various implementation theories, models, and frameworks. Our goal is to offer a broad overview of the implementation phase in intervention research and to highlight key issues that should be considered to maximize the success of implementation efforts.
