2023
Abstract
This chapter focuses on early intervention services in home and community settings under the US Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA) of 2004. The requirements set forth by IDEA, the beliefs and approaches of family-centered service delivery, and the diverse facets of evidence are presented as the foundation for the provision of early intervention physical therapy services. Physical therapists provide unique expertise to the early intervention team. Elements of service delivery including team collaboration, evaluation and assessment, Individualized Family Service Plan, natural environments, and transition are discussed. Considerations for professional development are highlighted. Four cases are presented to illustrate various approaches to service delivery in early intervention practice.
