Abstract

Human Internet Interviews Positionality Professionalism Psychology: Professional & Research Qualitative Methods Safety Trust (Social Behavior)
Interviews are the hallmark of qualitative research. This chapter describes 12 steps that are essential to conducting quality interviews, from aligning the interview questions with the research question to identifying a type of interview and then designing and pilot-testing an interview protocol. It discusses the process of conducting online interviews. Trust and psychological safety are paramount to the interview process. Good relationship-building and communication skills are a key part of the research toolkit. One tool for building cohesion and trust across the members of the research team is writing and sharing a positionality statement or research stance. Discussing author roles and author order (i.e., on a journal article) is advisable to allay concerns about publication, especially because students occupy a less powerful position than professors. These discussions will build a foundation for trust and ensure high standards of professionalism. Teamwork and professionalism help ensure smooth interviewing.
