Abstract
The idea for this book originated with the experience of Paul Harris, who was seeking promotion from assistant professor to a tenured position as associate professor at the University of Virginia (UVA). While Harris produced thoughtful and effective research in the field of counselor education and received positive reviews from his department chair, he was denied tenure because of concerns about the publication of some of his scholarship in certain journals (Zahneis, 2020). Specifically, Harris sought to publish his research in journals directed at Black and Brown educators, administrators, and practitioners. One such peer-reviewed journal was the Journal of African American Males in Education (JAAME). Though the journal accepted only 23% of submissions, some external reviewers questioned the scholarly legitimacy of JAAME and argued that Harris’s publications in this journal were equivalent to self- publishing (Hudson, 2021). Due to overwhelming support for Harris’s application from the scholarly community, including many prominent Black and Brown scholars, UVA reversed its decision and promoted Harris to a tenured position as associate professor in the counselor education program.
