Introduction: Urban Cultural Planning Now: Some Thoughts and Executive Summary
The Routledge Handbook of Urban Cultural Planning, pp 1-14
2024
Abstract
Arts, culture, and heritage are the glue that connect people in a city, building a sense of belonging beyond its buildings and infrastructure. Arts and culture in cities define the civic sphere through physical and symbolic objects, events, and ways people live together that are emblematic of a place. In short, culture creates meaning for a place. Urban cultural planning is a set of strategic approaches to integrate these cultural elements into urban development processes to enhance community engagement, promote cultural vibrancy, and shape the identity of and belonging in cities. This article synthesizes current approaches to urban cultural planning and reviews the "why" for urban cultural planning, defines the recent history of urban cultural planning, and provides an executive summary and outline for the Routledge Handbook of Urban Cultural Planning.
