Issues in Teaching and Assessing Language as Communication
Research Questions in Language Education and Applied Linguistics, pp 107-110
2021
Abstract
Teaching language as communication has been the dominant paradigm in English language teaching since Dell Hymes’ (1974) conception of communicative competence was applied to language teaching, learning, and assessment (Canale & Swain, 1980; Widdowson, 1980). Contradictions in this model remain unresolved, including the place of content and meaning, interlocutor and speaker interactions, and multimodality. Developments in the twenty-first century will bring these issues more prominently into view.
