Book chapter
Juvenile Commitment
Forensic Mental Health Assessment
01 Jul 2014
Abstract
This chapter focuses on the legal question of the disposition of juvenile cases. It is called “commitment” because the commitment to a state department of juvenile justice for residential placement is one of the options before the juvenile court if there is an adjudication of delinquency. Other options typically include community placement or some form of probation, whether intensive or standard. The principle for the first case involves accepting referrals within one’s area of expertise. The principle for the second case describes the importance of providing appropriate notification and obtaining authorization, and highlights considerations specific to juvenile populations.
