Abstract
This article introduces the fundamental notions of Knowledge-Based Systems before introducing a variety of categories of knowledge-based systems in design. It distinguishes between systems used for analysis and those used for synthesis. It concludes by discussing research which is likely to support future knowledge-based design systems.
