Abstract
In my search for robust projects, I conducted mail surveys, personal interviews, a computer review of the literature, and phone interviews; attended conferences and workshops; and had many carefully focused informal conversations. The bar at the AFL-CIO George Meany Center for Labor Studies, for example, is widely known as a source of some of the best anecdotes about union life. But even with this diversity of resources, the research confirmed my belief that far too little information is available about union experiments both within labor’s ranks and outside them.
