Abstract
The diverse family of two‐dimensional (2D) carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides of early transition metals called “MXenes” has been quickly growing, with dozens of compositions reported to date. They exhibit an unusual combination of electronic, chemical, and mechanical properties. Recently, attractive optical and optoelectronic properties of MXenes have been demonstrated, including plasmonic behavior, optical nonlinearities, and ultrafast dynamics, enabling utilization of MXenes in a variety of devices. Moreover, these properties can be modulated using an ionotronic approach. In this chapter, we provide an overview of selected optical properties and phenomena, and applications of MXenes in the field of plasmonics, ultrafast optics, nonlinear optics, and optoelectronics. Accounting for the variety of available MXene structures and compositions that offer tunable optical properties, MXenes exhibit immense potential in optics and optoelectronics fields.
