This article reviews the mechanisms underlying systems consolidation by integrating across theoretical perspectives and emerging empirical data. By integrating across these literatures, we provide a framework to understand how active processes occurring “offline” following learning stabilize and transform information in long-term memory. This article spans research covering animal models of learning and memory, human lesion studies, neuroimaging studies, computational models. We further characterize how memories that are undergoing consolidation interact with other learning systems, prior knowledge, and motivation/affect.
