Abstract
Art therapy is at a critical and opportunistic point in its professional development when decisions about a research agenda can contribute to clarifying the essential nature or worldview of art therapy, identifying phenomena and/or variables requiring research, mindfully selecting the most compatible and rigorous methodologies resulting in increased efficacy and growth in the field. Mixed methods research provides viable options for advancing the art therapy research agenda while preserving the essential meaning of the field. This chapter first presents a brief contextual overview of the sociocultural and sociopolitical influences on research, followed by a more detailed discussion of the philosophical assumptions or worldview of art therapy. Subsequently, a brief introduction to mixed methods philosophies, typologies, and designs is presented, after which a summary about the synergy between art therapy and mixed methods research concludes the chapter.
