Abstract
North American cities are currently facing the urgent question of how to make the transition to more sustainable mobilities. Generally, this involves a combination of policies to promote active transport and improve public transport. Cities with older colonial cores, such as Philadelphia, New York, Montreal, or Toronto, have a very compact walkable street grid and transit-friendly physical layout. They are therefore amenable to promoting a gradual transition toward more sustainable modes of active transport using tools such as complete street designs, changes in zoning codes, building bicycling infrastructure, introducing bike share systems, restricting automobile use in the city center, and
