Abstract
My first exposure to mathematical research was under the supervision of Professor Leonid (“Leonia”) Lerer during the academic year 1984–1985. From the very beginning we had a very amicable relationship, and what will always stand out in my memory is his consistently calm and friendly demeanor. Leonia was always encouraging, and he never lost his patience, even during the slow periods. He also managed to enjoy life to the fullest – among other things, he savored the fresh Dutch raw herring during lunch.
