Neighborhood Stress and Health
Encyclopedia of Stress, pp 825-827
2007
Abstract
Neighborhood characteristics are associated with health outcomes independently of individual-level factors. It has been hypothesized that neighborhood stressors may be one of the mechanisms linking neighborhoods to health. The most common neighborhood stressors investigated are neighborhood problems, neighborhood disorder, violence and safety, and physical ambient characteristics. There is some evidence that neighborhood stressors are related to self-reported physical and mental health. Evidence linking neighborhood stressors to objectively measured physical health outcomes is scant.
