Neonatal kidney transplantation: are we ready for clinical implementation?
Cutting Edge Advances in Transplantation, pp 261-296

Abstract
Renal transplantation is the treatment of choice for children and adults with end stage renal disease. It is well recognized that patient survival, quality of life, growth and cognitive development are superior with transplantation than with dialysis. As donor demographics change, with poorer quality deceased donor kidneys, falling live kidney donation rate, longer wait-time with increased death rate on the waitlist and severe organ shortage, additional stratagems are sought to expand the donor pool. Neonatal kidneys may be considered a source of kidneys, until now unexplored, despite the description of the long term successful transplantation of both kidneys from an anencephalic infant 53 years ago.
