Abstract
This chapter discusses neurological disorders in women. It begins with a brief overview of structural and functional brain differences between men and women and focuses on two neurological disorders that affect women more than men during younger and middle adulthood. The chapter also discusses strokes and Alzheimer's disease. Migraine headaches represent one of the most common neurological problems experienced by younger women. Migraine is classified as a “syndrome” because of its complex neurological presentation that may cause a wide variety ofsymptoms, which can precede, coincide with, or follow the headache pain. Neuroscience continues to move toward an improved explanation of theunderlying neurological mechanism of migraine, and evidence thus far implicates abnormal transmission of serotonin. Interventions for women experiencing sexual dysfunction include education and counseling, which have been demonstrated to help women cope with sexual dysfunction.
