Abstract

Education & Educational Research Language & Linguistics Linguistics Social Sciences
The language and culture training course for international medical graduates (IMGs) draws upon a theoretical framework within discourse analysis and intercultural communication to understand how institutional/professional discourse unfolds within multilingual and multicultural societies. Through this training course, IMGs play a threefold role, as observers, participants, and researchers. They observe how communication develops in different contexts and reflect upon it, actively participate in social activities and modulate their talk in response to recipients' contributions, and become researchers in the process of exploring the best communicative practices through the analysis and assessment of their own and others' communicative performances.
