Abstract

Abdominal Wall Defect Associate Anomaly Cloacal Exstrophy Intestinal Atresia Short Bowel Syndrome
Gastroschisis and omphalocele represent two distinct congenital abnormalities of the anterior abdominal wall. Dudrick's development of total parenteral nutrition in the late 1960s and Schuster's successful application of an extra-abdominal housing (silo) for eviscerated bowel in 1967, provided surgeons with much needed tools to enhance the treatment for and improve the survival of infants with gastroschisis and omphalocele. Advancements in prenatal ultrasonography, neonatal monitoring and ventilator management continue to improve outcomes for critically ill infants with abdominal wall defects.
