Oxidation in Oxygen and Air
Corrosion of High-Performance Ceramics, pp 3-60
1992
Abstract
High-temperature oxidation is the most wide-spread type of corrosion of structural ceramics. It is similar to the oxidation of metals in many respects. The same methods and theories are used to investigate and describe the kinetics of both processes. At the same time there are also several differences. Thus, due to the very high oxidation resistance, the majority of ceramic materials should be investigated with the help of precision instruments; the dielectric properties of ceramics restrict the applicability of certain modern physico-chemical methods of analysing oxidation products; the oxidation of nonoxide ceramics results both in solid and gaseous products, which causes certain difficulties in quantitative calculations following the theories developed for metals.
