PRONUNCIATION AS LIFE AND DEATH: IMPROVING THE COMMUNICATION SKILLS OF NON-NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKING PATHOLOGISTS
Innovation and Leadership in English Language Teaching
01 Jan 2011
Abstract
Many hospitals in the United States are under pressure to demonstrate an improvement in the English proficiency of international medical doctors. This chapter describes an English for professional medical communication course that was designed for international pathology residents but could be used effectively in any medical specialty. The effectiveness of the course, which focused on pronunciation, was measured by an authentic, on-the-job communication measure-a dictation of pathology specimens for transcription by medical secretaries. This type of course will be increasingly in demand to meet the needs of the numerous teaching hospitals that have international resident doctors on staff.
