Part II Introduction
Robust Unionism, p53
15 May 2019
Abstract
Don’t mourn for me. Organize!” was the last message Joe Hill, labor’s legendary troubadour, sent out of a Utah prison before his execution in 1915 on a trumped-up murder charge. That message still resounds. Labor’s first obligation is to help workersunskilled, skilled, and professional--create locals that can balance the potentially overwhelming power of management.
Chapter 4 explores some of labor’s problems in this process, while focusing on outstanding responses. These include updated versions of familiar organizing tools and some robust innovations: the use of volunteer and college-based organizers, approaches tailored to immigrant workers, the development of an associate member category
