Peer support and service engagement
Person-centered care for mental illness: The evolution of adherence and self-determination, pp 191-209
2015
Abstract
The goal of this chapter is to explore the ways in which peer support in its many forms might enhance service engagement. First we review current, albeit limited data on the potential contributions that peer support might make to enhancing service engagement. We then describe the results from a new study on the impact of certified peer specialists on service engagement. Historically, peer support has been mentioned as something that might drive people away from services, especially psychiatry (Lee, 1995), with evidence suggesting that a small percentage of mental health providers may have concerns about peer-delivered services (Salzer, Rappaport, & Segre, 2001). This chapter is intended to inspire further thinking about roles and potential outcomes of peer support as a developing intervention and research area.
