Abstract

Acceptability Feasibility Iterative design Usability
Pilot testing is a critical component of the behavioral intervention research pipeline. In this chapter, we describe the role of pilot testing in intervention development, evaluation, and implementation. We discuss issues that are addressed in pilot testing, such as recruitment strategies, intervention and assessment protocols, training strategies for research personnel and study participants, and implementation strategies. We also review the constructs of acceptability, feasibility, usability, and strategies for their measurement. Our goal is to provide guidance on the importance of and the many aspects of pilot testing and to illustrate how pilot testing contributes to the success of a behavioral intervention.
