Abstract
Ample evidence points to the important. role of parent and family involvement. in the school success of students. Yet, developing meaningful and effective home and school partnerships is often difficult, especially in low income urban communities. Erin McNamara Horvat presents data from a historical case study of one urban public K-8 school over a 30-year period. The author examines the nature of this home and school partnership over time, paying special attention to: 1) the collective nature of the parental involvement, 2) the important role of ideology in the development of the partnership, and 3) the ways in which the school created pathways for authentic parental involvement. in the school.
