Utilizing Service Learning Practices for Creative Design Improvements, pp 91-124

Abstract
This chapter explores the development and impact of Designing for Playful Learning, a college course equipping architecture and design students with service-learning skills to create interactive urban installations that foster community engagement. Addressing the lack of child-friendly spaces in underserved neighborhoods, the course aligns with Playful Learning Landscapes, a movement transforming public areas like bus stops and parks into learning-rich environments that enhance caregiver-child interactions. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, students co-design small-scale, cost-effective interventions alongside community members, ensuring cultural relevance and sustainable impact. The course is now available as an open-source resource to expand its reach.
