Abstract

Despite its remarkable success, with the milestone one-millionth transplant reported by UNOS on September 9, 2022, organ transplantation continues to face critical challenges. Foremost is the profound mismatch between the number of waitlisted patients and the availability of organs. In 2023, 109,671 individuals awaited transplantation, yet only 23,987 organs became available. As a result, over 5000 patients died waiting for a kidney, while 7000 marginal kidneys were discarded. These figures underscore an urgent need for innovation in utilization and efficiency. Paradoxically, the research and publications in transplantation, while invaluable, have at times overwhelmed rather clarified the path forward. Thus, truly transformative insights can be difficult to identify and implement. Cutting Edge Advances in Transplantation was conceived to address this very challenge. This volume curates the most promising approaches in the field – from the utilization of marginal and acutely injured organs, to transplantation of organs in extreme age groups, to management of high immunologic risk recipients. It also explores modern strategies and technologies to improve organ preservation. This book invites clinicians, researchers, and students alike to engage with these critical advances and be part of the next wave of progress in transplantation.
