Promotion of Optimal Nutrition in the Older Adult
Evidence-Based Geriatric Nursing Protocols for Best Practice, Seventh Edition, pp 135-144
01 Jan 2024
Abstract
Nutritional status is the balance of nutrient intake, physiological demands, and metabolic rate. However, older adults are at risk of poor nutrition. Furthermore, malnutrition, a recognized geriatric syndrome (Institute of Medicine), is of concern because it can often be unrecognizable and impacts morbidity, mortality, and quality of life. Hospitalized older adults are at risk of malnutrition. Nurses should carefully assess and monitor the nutritional status of the older hospitalized patient so that appropriate nutrition-related interventions can be implemented in a timely fashion. This chapter discusses the methods to screen and assess nutritional status in the older adult. It helps the reader use appropriate nursing interventions in the hospitalized older adult who is either at risk for malnutrition or has malnutrition. It also helps the reader identify the importance of screening for nutrition risk during transitions in care.
